Inkscape is absolutely the best program for vector graphics, in my opinion far superior also to Adobe Illustrator. Vector graphics is a resolution-independent description of the actual shapes and objects that you see in the image. In contrast to raster (also called ‘bitmap’) graphics editors such as Photoshop or GIMP, Inkscape stores its graphics in a vector format.
